Gemma Griffiths and Ammara Brown's "Mambokadzi" represents women.

Updated: Apr 12, 2021

From this article, I will talk about the relevance of the title, how women should work together in harmony, how it serves as a tribute to the 16 days of activism against gender based violence and the issue concerning gender inequality.

The title of the song Mambokadzi means the queen hence women are seen in a positive light. This shows that the song is all about uplifting women. Moreover the term Mambokadzi symbolises a queen who is highly respected in society hence women deserve the same respect as men get.

There are various ways in which the song represents women. According towww.gemnation.news: "Review:Gemma Griffiths & Ammara Brown glorify women in Mambokadzi video by Jonathan Mbiriyamveka on December 6,2019, it states that,"This is a huge step in Zimbabwe today and in this video with an female cast,it sets out to show how women are better than men in more ways than one". Moreover he says,"On the other hand we see familiar faces in the video the likes lf Chengeto Brown, a sign that women are working together in harmony". In most cases, some women often judge one another especially if one of them makes a mistake, however the fact that they are working together in harmony clearly shows that Mambokadzi represents women. As stated by Jonathan Mbiriyamveka, "the music was done by Reverb7 and Simba Tagz as well as talented guitarist Sylent Nqo.

The song not only represents women,it also acts as a tribute to the 16 days of activism against gender based violence. According to UNFPA,"In Zimbabwe, about 1 in 3 women aged 15 to 49 have experienced physical violence and about 1 in 4 women have experienced sexual violence since the age of 15". As stated by other sources on the internet,Gender-Based Violence is a real problem and artists are using their resources to speak out and finally pressure lawmakers and citizens alike into taking a stand. Gemma Griffiths and Ammara Brown are two of those artists.

This is why both artists said on the lyrics,"..We require respect/We're symbols of freedom/With the crowns on our heads". It serves as a message to stop gender based violence. Women should be appreciated and respected. Moreover it also brings out the issue of gender inequality where women in today's society are seen to be inferior to men. The music video highlights the need for gender equality because women deserve the same opportunities as men receive for example education, career etc. This is why the song represents women in a positive light. Mambokadzi was released on 6 December 2019.
