n.e.r.d. life by D’Vo is an anonymous Experimental Hip Hop and Neo-Soul Artist based in Houston, TX. He is the creator of the Christian Hip Hop Series, “The Codex”, which will be an extension of eleven albums. The third album, The Codex: Court Vision, was just released on September 14, 2021. The album is rich in R&B melodies, soulful solos, rhythmic instrumentals, G-funk & H-town styles making it an experimental experience, with sports references throughout the lyricism.

The seventh song on the album is Evolution of Hip Hop, a classic hip hop track on an experimental beat. It gives off a 90s hip hop vibe with the infamous modulated voice D’Vo is known for. The song shines a light on the messages in hip-hop culture today.

The music video takes viewers back in time to the early artistry of hip hop. It starts with DJ Kool Herc from the genre’s origins in Bronx, New York to the likes of Queen Latifah and TLC in the late 90s and early 2000s. It is considered a music documentary to show viewers the key people who influenced hip-hop culture.

It is worth noting that hip hop in the 1990s and early 2000s was based on conscious hip-hop. For example, Queen Latifah's "U.N.I.T.Y" is centred on confronting societal disrespect of women. It also includes some important topics. For instance, street harassment, domestic abuse, and slurs directed at women in hip-hop culture. As a result, "Evolution of Hip Hop" is a notable track. It shows significant music from the 1990s and early 2000s.

My thoughts

I liked the concept of the track. It helped me have a better understanding of how hip hop started. In terms of lyricism, it was okay. The production was 50/50. It is an important track for the hip hop community. Therefore, I would rate the track around 7.5/10.

Those who listen to the full work of The Codex: Court Vision will hear a story of faith and truth strategically woven between each track with a victorious ending and sobering interview about humility and giving God the credit for each win.

In addition to the lyricism, you can expect to hear experimental beats and 90s R&B renditions.
