Yes it was.
During the Muve Music Sessions interview,Cole explained that he held onto the song for four years before putting it on the album,Cole World:The Sideline Story.Cole stated that,"......when the idea came to me it was because of something personal was going on.Not even with me...with a very close friend of mine. So it gave me the idea to write the song".
The title ,"Lost One's" is making reference to the lives lost through abortions.
"Lost Ones" is a dialogue between a young couple who've discovered the girl is pregnant.
One of the reasons why the song is based on someone's experience is because the song and the lyrics seems like a story. The structure of the lyrics shows J Cole's point of view about the pregnancy (verse 1) .He wants her to have an abortion. Moreover he said ''....I cry sometimes about it" clearly shows an element of sadness to the song hence based on a real live event.
Verse 2 shows the girl's point of view about the pregnancy. There is a lot of emotion shown on the video. The girl feels betrayed and hurt that he actually wants her to have an abortion. There is a lot of emotion which is shown in detail through the lyrics e.g. exclamation marks and offensive words clearly shows that she is angry at him.
From the lyrics, "Did you forget all those............You ain't shit, nigga!" is shown in great detail about someone's background hence this is based on someone's personal experience.
First chorus says, "Then we could make it work, but I doubt it" while second chorus says,"Still we can make it work, but I doubt it".Probably shows that J.Cole changed his mind about her having an abortion but the girl already decided she will raise the baby by herself.
Verse 3 explains why he wanted her to have an abortion. He thought she was trying to trap him as shown on verse 3,"....Man these hoes be trappin'niggas". Moreover where it says,"But what about your seed, nigga?" shows so much feelings about the baby. This is why at the final end of the song there is a feeling of regret from J.Cole.
During the Muve Music Sessions interview J.Cole said,".....that's one of my favorite songs.Because obviously, when you listen to it,it's super emotional, super deep.I feel like my favourite records of my own are my favorite because they really hit your heart or I know the impact it'll have on people".This is why its one of his favorites and this is why the song is based on someone's personal experience.
