Hidden meaning behind the song "MIDDLE CHILD" by J Cole.

Updated: Jun 11, 2020

There's been a lot of opinions concerning the song "Middle Child'.The Insider said that it mainly talks about Cole being a bridge between old rap music and new rap music. This view is supported where Cole says, "I'm dead in the middle of two generations".Hip hop has changed as time went on. During the 90s artists like 2pac were known to be one of the greatest rappers of all time for example, "Do for love".Those were the good old days,hip-hop was real and motivational hence J.Cole is paving the way for other rappers to be real with their music.

On the video, MIDDLE CHILD we see dead people and rappers heads on the wall. The Insider on YouTube said they represent Lil Pump and his feature and you the person who loves the rapper is being exposed to karma and bad luck or worse death.

Moreover the video might also be making reference to his past beef rapper Lil Pump as stated by the Insider on YouTube. However as it is shown on Genius news :J.Cole's MIDDLE CHILD Explained by Jacques Morel on YouTube,Cole has learnt to appreciate everything that is different including new rap music. This is shown on the lyrics below :

J.Cole seems to make reference to all the new rappers in the rap game and he appreciates them which is probably the reason why he has collaborated with 6LACK,21 Savage etc.

There is also a hidden meaning behind the title of the song, MIDDLE CHILD.According to Genius News on YouTube it states that J.Cole is using the title as a metaphor to his position in rap. This could probably be making reference to J.Cole being stuck between the 90's hip hop and the new hip hop. This is shown on the lyrics below:

This is shown when J.Cole appears in the middle of the screen while everything is happening around him hence why he is in the middle of two generations.

Moreover Jacques Morel said on Genius news ,"Cole raps about his dedication to elevating those around him rather than just emersing the wealth for himself". This is shown on the lyrics below:

This shows that J.Cole is all about elevating others especially rappers.

Not only does MIDDLE CHILD has hidden meanings, there is a lesson drawn from it. There is a part where he said,"Money in your palm don't make you real". This could be making reference to the new rappers to be real with their music. J.Cole is probably trying to say that don't be a rapper because of money and fame but be a rapper because you're happy about making music. As long as they are after money and fame then it just makes them fake. This is one of the reasons why I believe J.Cole is paving the way for other rappers to be real with their music.

The song went 3xPlatinum on June 10 2019 and it features on the album Revenge of the Dreamers III.

In conclusion,MIDDLE CHILD is all about J.Cole's position on rap. The fact that he is being a bridge between old rap music and new rap music means that he is paving the way for other rappers to be real with their music. J. Cole said,"This year gon'be be different,I set my intentions" means that he is ready to dominate the music scene no matter what.
